Hudson Mohawke, Squarepusher & Andrew Weatherall at Warp20 (Sheffield)

September 19th, 2009 No comments

A selection of 360° panoramic photos of the Warp20 (Sheffield) gig at Magna. Stunning venue, great soundsystem and lighting, and superb music from 20 years of Warp artists. A night of unbridled quality in Warp’s former home city.

Firstly, two shots of Scotland’s most talked about hip hop producer, Hudson Mohawke, whose debut album ‘Butter’ is released on Warp Records in October. Believe the buzz surrounding him, this guy has more talent than his years might suggest; and his bass heavy, wonky, glitchy, electronic hip-hop electronic sound (and visuals) tore it up. The album should be a belter…

Secondly, label stalwart Squarepusher raised the pace and ripped up the place with an exclusive solo set of dancefloor-orientated tracks. Micro-processed amen breaks, thumping 4/4 beats and neon-drenched acid and bass, enfused with a frenetic funkiness I’ve not heard from the man in years.

Finally Andrew Weatherall, the chairman himself, on the decks for a set of perfectly chosen and mixed warehouse classics. Wall-to-wall acid house, bleep techno and other tracks ideally suited to playing in a giant former steelworks in front of 3000 people. Probably the highlight of my night was when he dropped LFO vs FUSE’s ‘Loop’ over the top of the David Holmes remix Sabres of Paradises’s “Smokebelch II”. The roof nearly came off the building. He may be a DJ and producer with few peers, but Weatherall’s breadth of musical taste is so widely varying you never quite know what you’ll get when you see him play: however this ranks as one of the very best sets I’ve heard him play in the last 15+ years. Especially good to photograph him again almost a year after his appearance at Autodisco, when I wasn’t able to shoot a pano as it was just too dark.

Honourable mentions also go to Harmonic 313, Nightmares on Wax, Clark and Forgemasters, who all also played (and rocked it) on the night; and special thanks to the Warp staff for making this happen.

Tribute01 … WTF? WFL!

June 9th, 2009 No comments

Here’s a very mysterious one-sided 12″ label I’ve just completed for a new imprint, Tribute. Having been sworn to secrecy, all I can divulge is that it’s forthcoming in strictly limited quantities.

It’s a reworking of a popular song by a popular beat combo, reworked by a popular (and highly secretive) production duo. Unlike the Boomtown Rats, we DO like Mondays!

English Electric, live at Terrorist #7

May 3rd, 2009 No comments

The good folk at Sounds from the Other City asked the team from Terrorist to curate one of the venues at this year’s festival. An all-day venue (the Black Lion in Salford)  played host to a quality line up of modern electronics from a diverse and talented range of artists including Legowelt, Troubleshooter and Mark Jones.

This, however, is the mighty English Electric, pushing buttons and playing the floor. Three quarters of an hour of acid, pads, rhythm and bass which absolutely rocked the place. Hopefully I’ll be able to update this page to link to a recording of the live set soon.

Late night tales with Timmy Diamond

May 3rd, 2009 No comments

Enjoying some late night entertainment and silliness after a Jam Street Café session. Timmy Diamond usurps Tim Inserted from his normal place behind the decks … just before the crazy Ibizan liquor came out to finish us all off for the night …

Pretty in the pink – my birthday at Bare Arts

April 19th, 2009 No comments

My 34th birthday celebrations at Bare Arts: enjoying good tunes, good ales and great company in Todmorden’s finest licensed outlet. My mate Tim and I are sharing the laptop to DJ in this shot. I’m quite impressed I was able to shoot this after enjoying the delights of the beer selection for so many hours :)

Katelectro – Plug EP

November 8th, 2008 No comments

This is a recent piece for a forthcoming release on the Scots label, Mighty Robot Recordings. It’s an electro EP by a young female producer, with remixes from Ultradyne and Ottomatic. The 3 different plugs were inspired by the combination of a Scottish label, a French producer, and a remix from Detroit’s foremost electro musicians. The idea of the jack came from a design from the artist. As I arranged the plugs on a lightbox and shot away I tried lots of differing angles and layouts, but this reminds me of an evil robot probe closing in on the lonely jack. I feel this is a suitably dark and dystopian vibe for the release.

New English Electric 12″ design

October 7th, 2008 No comments

Here’s a sneak preview of the forthcoming EE 12″ on Dumb Terminal Records. Iain Thomson aka English Electric has produced a brilliant followup to the critically acclaimed Autobeam EP which was released earlier this year on Mighty Robot Recordings.

It’s a fantastic floor-friendly EP, filled with his characteristic micro-produced beats and textures and shot throughout with addictive harmonies and a solid dose of electronic funk. As usual it’s hard to label with a specific genre, but rest assured it’s more gold from the English Electric studios.
