This is a great spot on the road from Trawden to Widdop. The pillbox on the hill behind has always struck me as being rather incongruous and isolated. Why place a pillbox in, without meaning to be rude, the arse end of nowhere? Bored Home Guard with too much time and concrete on their hands? A lingering post war of the roses paranoia that the Yorkists would unexpectedly surge across Widdop Moor in an attempt to annex Colne? Whatever the backstory, I love the view and the delightfully textured old-fashioned roadsign at this junction. Whenever I get here I know i’m not far from my mate’s house, and the wild moorland is behind me.
